Analyzing Groundwater for Agriculture

AGWA

About Us

AGWA is a student-led research project through the Gemstone Honors College program at the University of Maryland, College Park. We are investigating how saltwater intrusion is affecting agriculture across Maryland's coastal plain with a focus on geospatial analysis and predictive modeling.

Research Focus

Our research centers on 3 main questions:

  • Where and how much are farmers irrigating?

  • Can we track or predict soil salinization around salt patches?

  • Can we predict the economic impact of soil salinization?

Our Research Pipeline

We plan to use a multi-modal approach to connect our 3 big questions.

1

Irrigation Model

Detect irrigation trusses via remote sensing. Used to create a better estimate of water usage across farmland

2

Salinity Model

Predict a gradient of salinity around salt patches as an estimate of the severity and spread of saltwater on farmland

3

Economic Analysis

Evaluate how predicted changes in salinity impact farm profitability and long-term sustainability
